Xilinx And Xebeo Communications Team Up To Bridge The Metro Area Network Gap
SAN JOSE, CA--(INTERNET WIRE)--Jun 12, 2002 -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX), announced today that Xebeo Communications,
a leader in metro area networking solutions, selected the
Xilinx® Virtex-II Platform FPGA, to deliver advanced
packet processing capabilities in its carrier class packet
switching platform, the Xebeo MetroBridge. Corporate internal
LAN bandwidths and applications are growing at a much faster
rate than access out of the building creating the 'Metro
Gap'. Xebeo multi-services switches enable carriers to simply,
reliably and profitably deliver premium connectivity and
services to bridge this gap in the metro network. Xebeo's
optical wire speed packet processing and legacy service
and network interfacing intelligently bridges the optical
access, metro and transport networks and scales from 40
Gigabits per second to 4 Terabits per second. Xebeo Communications
is among a growing number of next-generation networking
companies to use Xilinx FPGAs in metro area networking (MAN)
applications.
"The Virtex II FPGA series from Xilinx offers wide range
of key, high performance features including: high speed
serial and memory interfaces in addition to application
specific hard macros, such as DLLs, numerous clock trees,
and multipliers. These features are critical in meeting
the performance requirements of modern packet processing
and switching platforms and in enabling new and exciting
services for network operators," said Dr. Lampros Kalampoukas,
chief technology officer at Xebeo Communications. "Furthermore,
they offer an excellent and more economic alternative to
custom silicon solutions, while accelerating time-to-market
availability."
Xilinx is fast becoming the supplier of choice for the MAN
market. The constantly evolving standards require a flexible
alternative to ASICs. "With the recent introduction of Virtex-II
Pro
FPGAs, we have been able to extend the industry's leading
programmable platform to provide the optimal mix of flexibility,
density, performance, and features required to address the
most demanding applications such as Metro Area Networking,
" said Robert Bielby, senior director of Strategic Solutions
Marketing at Xilinx. "Through close collaboration between
Xilinx and Xebeo engineering, we have also been able to
refine timing and characterization of the high-speed inter-chip
communication interfaces ensuring maximal performance for
packet switching applications. We are very pleased with
the results of this collaboration and look forward to continuing
our efforts with Xebeo."
About the Metro-Optical Networking Forum
On July 25, 2002 in Santa Clara, Calif., Xilinx, along with
other industry leaders, will host a free one-day event to
address the challenges of designing and developing products
for the metro area and edge access networks. Xebeo's Dr.
Kalampoukas will be among the many industry leaders and
visionaries to present on where this dynamic market is headed
and technologies driving success in the MAN space. Locations
and agenda information can be found at www.xilinx.com/metro.
